The Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) course (delivered online and at both CET Joondalup and Jandakot* campuses in conjunction with Global Drone Solutions), is the certification required by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), to become a qualified drone/UAV pilot and operate RPAS within the commercial environment.
Obtaining your Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) is the first step to being able to operate remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), otherwise known as drones or UAV's for commercial or business purposes. The unmanned aviation industry is set to grow significantly in the next decade and remote piloted aircraft (RPA) have already begun replacing manned aircraft in many roles.
Why do electricians need drone technology?
Inspecting a roof for solar panel installation or maintenance, utilities and power line inspections, industrial busbar inspections or large scale infrastructure in the mining, gas and oil sectors, are all being completed with drones and will continue to grow!
Solar panels inspection
From the above, inspection of solar panels is one of the most common uses of drone technology for electricians. Solar panels can be prone to small defects that can be hard to see with the naked eye. Common defects include deterioration of cable insulation, failure of components, corrosion, components filling with water, or other damaged parts.
Thermal imaging can detect most damages, whilst a visual examination cannot. That’s because the most common defects with these panels lie in the interior. For example minor wiring issues or corrosion, can’t be seen. Really, the only thing that can be seen from a human is just exterior damage, which is much less common with solar panels.
While drones are primarily being used to find faults in solar panels, they also are being used to help plan the placement of panels for these large farms. They take up a vast amount of area and finding the most optimal place in terms of sunlight exposure is important.
Can I do this course at CET if I'm not an electrican?
Short answer to this, yes you can! Even though we are a college for the electrical industry, this particular course can be done by non-electricians. This module teaches you about factors that effect ability to fly an RPA like stress, fatigue, environmental and situational factors.
This module teaches you about risks to the public, crew and RPA. It also teaches you about various environmental factors and risk assessments.
This module teaches you about mission investigation, approval from CASA as well as risk assessment and practical planning exercise.
